Corporal Stinnett honored as 2019 Health & Human Services Hero

The Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) honored its first 2019 Health & Human Services Hero by surprising Corporal Danielle Stinnett with the award at the Gaston County Sheriff's office in front of coworkers and her family. Corporal Stinnett is the Programs Coordinator at the Gaston County Jail and helps bring educational classes and services to inmates.
Corporal Stinnett is a 2019 Health & Human Services Hero due to her support of public health education and programming within the jail. Corporal Stinnett has been critical to the success of the Jail Reproductive Health Program, a new program that provides education about birth control and women's health issues to female inmates and then gives them the opportunity to get long-acting birth control in the jail if they choose. Unintended pregnancies can create an additional barrier to women once they get out of jail and can make it harder to get back on their feet. Additionally, Corporal Stinnett has helped coordinate educational programs about HIV, STDs, and other health issues for men and women in the jail, so local inmates can be healthier and reduce the spread of disease in Gaston County.
