Edward David "Doc" Abernathy, age 73, of Lee Black Road, passed away peacefully Friday morning February 7, 2020 at Atrium Health Charlotte. He was born November 13, 1946 in Gaston County to the late Edward Lee and Velma Hoyle Abernathy.

Doc retired from Carolina Freight. He was cherished by his family and loved by all who met him.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Jr. Abernathy, sisters, Lillian Goode, Jane Bradley, and Cindy Mellon; and his son, Rodney Hovis.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of nearly 27 years, Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Abernathy of the home; sons, Bryan Abernathy (Jennifer), and Brandon Abernathy (Allison); daughters, Brooke Davis, Leslie Shook (Jody), and Michelle Hovis; grandchildren, Kristin Abernathy, Christopher Abernathy, Justin Abernathy, Travis Harrelson, Ansley Abernathy, Sydney Grace Abernathy, Sara Davis, Belle Shook, Gracie Shook, Gabe Shook, Lily Shook, Amanda Hovis, Trevor Hovis, Tyler Hovis, Kelly Hovis, Elizabeth Shew, and Victoria Carter; sister, Diana Richards (F.E.); brothers, Guy Abernathy, and Ronnie Abernathy; niece, April Black; nephew, Kaleb Black; uncle, Herman Hoyle; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Thomas, Zack Thomas, Liam Abernathy, Lawson Harrelson, Chloe Carter, and John Paul Carroll.

A celebration of Doc's life will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday February 13, 2019 at Carpenter-Porter Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Jody Shook officiating.

His family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at City Memorial Cemetery.
