Mary "Sue" Yancey Nolen

Mary "Sue" Yancey Nolen, born November 3, 1928, in Newton, NC, is rejoicing in heaven as of July 30, 2020. Being born at home around midnight on November 2, she never knew if her birthday was actually November 2 or 3. Having passed away around midnight on July 29, no one knows for sure the actual date of death. Her death has imitated her birth, and for all the days in between she was blessed with a full life.

Sue moved to Cherryville in 1960 and quickly fell in love with the community. She said many times how thankful she was that God had moved her to Cherryville. She retired as secretary of East Elementary School after 22 years. Sue considered her job there a gift from the Lord, and loved her co-workers and students.

Her greatest joys in life were her family & her church, First United Methodist, where she sang in the choir until she could no longer attend rehearsals. Sue's children remember how she loved to visit the shut-ins. While growing up, they witnessed their mom visiting the elderly, and sending Christmas cookies to underprivileged children at their schools. She was active in the Eastern Star as well. Sue was a woman of faith, a joy to all who knew her, and an example to many whose paths she crossed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Jack Nolen, and an infant son; as well as her parents, June & Pearl Yancey, and sister, Opal Yancey Eckard.

Her survivors include three children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandsons. They are Mary Lane McGinnis and husband, Tony, of Knoxville, TN; Keith Nolen and wife, Lynne, of Lincolnton, NC; and Allyson Nolen of New Bern, NC. Grandchildren are John McGinnis and wife, Tarin, Valerie and Amy McGinnis, Grayson and Katie Nolen, Mary Kate, Meredith, Meghan and Amelia Bobbitt, and great-grandsons Cameron, Conor, Zeke and Elliot. Niece, Elaine Hall and husband, Gordon, nephews, Bruce Eckard and wife, Julie, and Chris Eckard and wife Denise.

Among her many friends, the family would like to recognize Kay Moths and Joyce Baxter, and thank them for the many days they spent visiting Sue and keeping her company. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Leonard Bumgardner officiating. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, social distancing and face coverings will be required.

Mrs. Nolen will lie-in-state Friday, July 31, 2020 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral & Cremation Services. The family will not be present during this time.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 601 N. Pink St. Cherryville NC 28021.
