Benjamin Schaeffer Wins Contest
Officials for the event were retired Gardner Webb professor Evan Thompson; Allan Nichols, who holds a law degree and has taught forensics at the college level, and District Court Judge Ali Paksoy Jr. Retired magistrate Doug Gold was timekeeper and Ludy Wilkie was contest chairman. Benjamin received a gold medal and cash prize, and the opportunity to advance to regional competition in Hickory in February. If successful there, he advances to state level competition, with scholarship prizes ranging from $500 to $3,500 dollars. The state winner will go to the national competition, with scholarships ranging from 14 thousand to 18 thousand dollars available. The son of Ron and Patty Schaeffer of Shelby, Benjamin plans to attend a liberal arts college and pursue a degree in political science after graduation. The event was held in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby.
