A  tenth  grader  at  Thomas  Jefferson  Classical  Academy  is  the  winner  of  the  High  School  Oratorical  Contest, sponsored  by  Shelby  American  Legion  Post  82.  Benjamin  Schaeffer  was  awarded  the  prize  Saturday,  January  7th.     He  had to  give  a  prepared  oration  on  any  aspect  of  the  U.S.  Constitution,  and  was  then  assigned  a  topic  on  Article  I,  Section  9:  “The  privilege  of the  writ  of  habeas  corpus  shall  not  be  suspended,  unless  when  in  cases  of  rebellion  or  invasion  the  public  safety  may  require  it.”
Officials  for  the  event  were  retired  Gardner Webb professor  Evan  Thompson;  Allan  Nichols,  who  holds a  law  degree  and has  taught  forensics  at  the  college level, and  District  Court  Judge  Ali  Paksoy  Jr.      Retired  magistrate  Doug  Gold  was  timekeeper  and   Ludy  Wilkie  was  contest  chairman.  
Benjamin  received  a  gold  medal  and  cash  prize,  and  the  opportunity  to  advance  to  regional  competition  in  Hickory  in  February.   If  successful there,  he  advances  to  state  level  competition, with scholarship  prizes  ranging  from  $500  to  $3,500  dollars.       The  state  winner  will  go  to  the  national competition,  with  scholarships  ranging  from  14  thousand  to  18  thousand  dollars  available.
 The  son  of  Ron  and  Patty  Schaeffer  of  Shelby,  Benjamin  plans  to  attend  a  liberal  arts  college  and  pursue  a  degree  in  political  science after  graduation.     The  event  was  held  in  the  fellowship  hall  of  Ascension  Lutheran  Church  in  Shelby.
