Claude Manson Lawing, Jr.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Claude Manson Lawing, Jr., age 97, who went to be with the Lord on February 25, 2025, at Atrium Health Cleveland. Born in Rutherford County on July 10, 1927, he was the son of the late Claude Manson Lawing, Sr. and Eva Lackey Lawing. In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Searcy Lawing; his sisters, Ethel Bridges and Verlie Leatherwood; and his brothers, Hugh Lawing and Perry Lawing. Claude lived a life full of service, love, and devotion to his family, friends, and community. His unwavering faith and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Claude is survived by his two daughters, Claudia Stroup and husband Matthew of Shelby, and Lisa McDowell and husband Tebin of Shelby; five grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Papa," Hannah McDowell Kiser and husband Zack, Cameron Stroup, Brandon McDowell, Justin McDowell, and Landon Stroup and wife Madison; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Morrison Lawing and his wife, Shirley; his sister, Carolyn Wood; three sisters-in-law, Janet Lawing, Betty Lawing, and Rebecca Searcy, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Claude was a proud Army veteran, serving as a corporal from 1950 to 1952. His commitment to service continued throughout his life, as he worked with Cleveland Insurance Agency for 35 years, followed by a career with BB&T from 1993 to 2008. For his dedication, he was honored with a plaque recognizing 53 years of service in the insurance industry.
A devoted member of the Shelby Lions Club for 71 years, Claude was recognized with the Melvin Jones Fellow award for his outstanding civic contributions. Above all, Claude cherished his family, and there was nothing he loved more than spending time with them-- often gathered around the table, sharing stories, laughter, and love. His love for his family was steadfast, and his commitment to them never wavered.
Claude was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Shelby for 70 years, where he served on many committees and in various areas of ministry. His life was a living example of the love of Christ, as he humbly and selflessly served others in every area of his life. His loyalty, protectiveness, and consistency were evident to all who knew him. He always made time for his loved ones, showing up when they needed him most, and his presence provided both comfort and strength.
Claude loved the outdoors--spending countless hours maintaining his immaculate yard and nurturing his garden. He enjoyed walking and taking in the beauty of nature, and now, we find comfort knowing that he is walking with Jesus.
Claude's life was defined by his humility, kindness, and steadfast commitment to his family, friends, and his faithful service to Christ. His unwavering faith and loving devotion to others have left a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 3:00 pm in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Shelby with Dr. Robert Canoy and Rev. Asher Panton officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.
