Howard Melvin Pender
Howard Melvin Pender, 76 of Will Dixon Road, Lawndale passed away, Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Atrium Health-Cleveland.
Born May 17, 1942 in Darlington County, SC he was a son of the late Paul Elexander Pender and Annie Elizabeth Plummer Pender. Howard graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC. His career with Butler Shoes brought him to settle in Cleveland County. From 1984 to 2009, he was the owner and heart of Handy Howard's Convenience Stores, earning him the nickname of Handy. Howard also fulfilled his lifelong dream of being a farmer. He instilled the love of gardening in his children. Howard was a long time member and Sunday school teacher at St. Peter's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jeremy Pender and Adam Pender both of Stanley; three daughters, Shannon Froehlich and husband, Dan of Gastonia; Brittany Pender and wife, Wanda of Lawndale and Virginia Ledbetter of Stanley; six grandchildren, Kendall Pender, Dalton Ledbetter, Blaine Britt, Aaron and Annalise Froehlich and Kloey Jade Pender; two brothers, Evander Pender and wife, Janice of Florence, SC and Virgil Pender and wife, Ernistine of Fayetteville and two sisters, Kathleen Ham of Society Hill, SC and Evelyn Atkinson of Elliott, SC.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 1:00 PM, Thursday at St. Peter's United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Elwell officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the burial.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
