Jerry Patterson Ledford
Jerry Patterson Ledford, 87, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Atrium Health in Waxhaw, North Carolina.
Jerry, affectionately known as Gramps by his grandchildren, was born in Shelby, North Carolina on November 1, 1936, to the late John Bynum Ledford and Mildred Patterson Ledford. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Ben Ledford.
Jerry proudly served in the United States Air Force as a Radio Operator/Theodolite Operator on the 551st Airborne planes consisting of the EC-121H and RC-121C airplanes. Jerry spoke highly of his team and his performance was highly commendable by his commanders. After serving in the Air Force, he received his bachelor's degree in business from Gardner-Webb University. He retired from C.A. Short company after a successful and lengthy career.
Jerry loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a proud member of Second Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Later, Jerry and Carol became members of New Bethel Church of Shelby. They were received with love and kindness. Jerry loved his Sunday School class and always put his church first.
He was a blessing to so many people. His infectious laugh, contagious smile, and genuine love for others will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
Jerry loved sports. He played football in South Shelby Schools and was a loyal fan of the Shelby High Golden Lions. On Friday nights, he looked forward to attending the football games with his son, Terry. They traveled to games out of town and to the State Championship games at NCSU, UNC, and Wake Forest stadiums. He was also a fan and season ticket holder of the Carolina Panthers.
Jerry is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Carolyn Dover Ledford, his children, Terry Dover Ledford (Michelle) and Carol Ann Cornatzer (Jeff), and his sister, Sue Lutz. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Cameron Bradshaw (Ashley), Pam Bumgardner (CJ), Angie Dorsey (Randy), Anna Cornatzer, Jacob Cornatzer, Jason Cornatzer, and Amber Grace Cornatzer. His memory will also be cherished by his three precious great-grandchildren, Abigail Dorsey, Noah Dorsey, and Jackson Edwards. Alongside his family, he had a love for animals and enjoyed spending time with his grand dogs and cats.
Jerry loved supporting his family. He attended birthday parties, high school and college graduations, prom pictures, baseball games, dance competitions, and other events involving his children and grandchildren. He also loved taking his grandchildren to pools, parks, and playing games with them.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 2, 2024, at New Bethel Church of Shelby, 706 Hamrick St, Shelby, NC 28150, with Rev. Mark Patchett officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
