Matilda Gaynell "Nell" Brackett
(CASAR) Matilda Gaynell "Nell" Brackett, 82, was rewarded for her earthly toils with a seat at Heaven's bountiful table on December 4th, 2018. Nell was a lifelong resident of Cleveland County and was known and loved by many.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, John Wayne Brackett; two sons, John Brackett (Nacey Martin) and Mark (Julie) Brackett and a daughter, Lora Brackett, all of Cleveland County. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Lita Price (Josh Scruggs) as well as four great-grandchildren; Alexis, Raegan, Skylyn and Maddi.
Nell was born in Belwood on April 22, 1936 to the late Paul and Lora Blanton Gantt. Five siblings also passed before her, brothers, Ralph Gantt, Bill Gantt and Joe Gantt; sisters Helen Wright and Ruth King as well as her son, Rick Brackett and her grandson, Rocky Newton.
Nell had a long and interesting career, during which time she meet many people and forged numerous friendships. Before marriage, she worked at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, then returned home where she worked at Morgan and Boggs in Casar, where she relished her role of helping people. She then worked in Food Services at the Cleveland County Jail for 12 years; a position she greatly enjoyed and which allowed her to eventually start her own catering business. She thrived here, and cherished her working relationship with Kay Warlick, Ethel Cook and Vicky Daves. When she retired, she would still occasionally work on special projects and often prepared feasts for a large number of family and friends.
Nell was a kindhearted woman who could always be counted upon to help someone in need but could also be counted upon to do the right thing and had high expectations for others to do the same. She loved and "adopted" many of all ages over the years. Beyond food and the gatherings that came with them, and the kids; family, faith and flowers were the keystones of her life.
Nell was a long-time member of Normans Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School for the youngsters and helping with church functions.
At her passing, she was surrounded by those who loved her most, and with God nigh, she now rests in eternal peace. Hallelujah.
Nell's family extends its great appreciation and love to all of the healthcare professionals and the many, many family and friends who honored us in helping Nell's last days pass in peace and without pain.
