Yates Ray McGinnis, 96, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at his residence.

Yates was born on October 8, 1926 in Gaston County, a son of the late Ervin S. McGinnis and Mae Bivens McGinnis. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Yates served the City of Cherryville in various capacities including, chief of police for 13 years, recorders court judge, worked for the fire department and the Cherryville Rescue Squad, civil defense director and served as a city councilman. He was also a 60 year member of Cherryville Masonic Lodge #505 A.F. & A.M., Oasis Shriners and Cherryville Shrine Club. Yates was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cherryville.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Wayne McGinnis.

Survivors include two sons, Todd McGinnis and wife Cathy of Marshville; Doug McGinnis and wife Nancy of Statesville; a sister, Corinne Mauney of Cherryville; a niece Joan Fowler and husband Louie of Cherryville; an adopted son, Kevin Parker of Cherryville. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville with military honors and masonic rites.

The family will greet friends following the service.
