Betty Jean Blackwell Whiten, 80, of 510 Thompson Street, passed away on Wednesday, July 19th, 2023, at Blue Ridge In Brookview Healthcare Center.

Born in York, South Carolina, she was the widow of Gordon Whiten and the daughter of Ola Victoria Blackwell. Betty formerly worked in textiles and was a member of Broad River Baptist Church of Blacksburg.

Surviving Mrs. Whiten are her sons, Arthur Ray Whiten (Vicki) and Kelly Ray Whiten (Lorie); her step-son, Norman Douglas Whiten; her half-brother, Naaman Jackson Dover; her half-sister, Sherry Diane Dover; her grandson, Robert Douglas Whiten; and her step-grandchild, Hayden; close family friends, Amanda Richards and Maddie Caldwell; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Whiten was preceded in death by her son, Francis Marion Whiten, her brother, Jerry Wayne Blackwell, and her half-sister, Ruby Wheeler.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 21, 2023, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at Gordon Mortuary, 400 West Cherokee Street, Blacksburg, SC. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 10:00 am at Broad River Baptist Church of Blacksburg. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Mike Patterson, Scott Patterson, Tim Wright, Larry Ervin, Mike Spencer, and Kelly Whiten will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark McDaniel and Earl Dean Lanning.
