Cecile Marie Rainey Browning

Cecile Marie Rainey Browning age 94, died on Saturday February 6, 2016 at Wendover Hospice House of Shelby. She had been in declining health for several years and died from complications of a fall. Born on July 3, 1921 in Spartanburg, SC, her family moved to Shelby when she was five. Her parents, William Jennings Rainey and Mamie Gorman Rainey, and her husband of 50 years, George W. Browning, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Browning McDaniel of Shelby, her son, Bill Browning and wife Becky of Charlotte; three sisters, Aileen Brooks of Salisbury, Vera Lanier of Shelby, and Mayo Younts of Lexington; three grandchildren, Kristen Strange and husband Lee of Tega Cay, SC, Will Browning of Charlotte, Allison Gaddy and husband Jonathan of Charlotte; and four great grandchildren, Avi Strange and Harrison Gaddy, Walt Gaddy and Knox Gaddy. She was affectionately known as "Meme".

Cecile graduated from Shelby High School in 1938 and shortly after that began her career at Shelby Cotton Mill where she worked as a dedicated office employee for over 35 years.

Her daily life was a testament to her strong faith and love of God. The church was always an integral part of her life. She was actively involved, first at LaFayette Street United Methodist and later at Aldersgate United Methodist. She worked with the MYF, enjoyed circle meetings, joined the Young at Heart and volunteered in the soup kitchen and in the church office. She was always willing to serve whenever asked.

A strong and independent woman, Cecile had a quick wit and a fierce sense of humor. She never met a stranger and, with her gentle spirit, easily shared her genuine love for others. She enjoyed telling stories, particularly those of visiting her cousins in Meadow Fork, NC. Even as her body and mind began to fail her, these qualities were always evident. She lived her entire life with grace and dignity and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family wishes to thank Brookdale (current and past employees), Cleveland Regional and Cleveland Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church budget, 1207 West Dixon Boulevard, Shelby, N.C. 28150; to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, N.C. 28150; or to the charity of donor's choice.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Tuesday February 9, 2016 at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Epworth Building. The burial will be private.
