Henry Forest Horne, Sr.

Henry Forest Horne, Sr., 82, of Shelby, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, January 9, 2016. Henry was the son of the late Horace Lee Horne and Clara Reid Horne of Shelby. Henry attended Shelby High School (class of 1953) where he played football and baseball. He entered military service in 1953, and spent his career in the United States Army, Military Police, retiring in 1977 with the highest non-commissioned officer rank of Sergeant Major. Henry served in the Vietnam War between 1968 and 1969, and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross for valor and heroic conduct while fighting the enemy. Upon retirement, the Army awarded Henry the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct and outstanding service and achievement in service to his Country. After retirement, Henry taught High School ROTC in Chattanoga, Tennessee where he also coached softball. Henry also worked as a security consultant for various industries following retirement. Henry worshipped at Eastside Baptist Church. He was also an active member of Shelby Masonic Lodge #744 AF&AM. In retirement, Henry loved fishing, and traveling with family and friends on cruises. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Joshua Adam Ferree, and his brother, Wallace Lee Horne, of Shelby. Henry is survived by his high-school sweetheart and wife of over sixty-three years, Yvonne Trammell Horne; his daughter, Cynthia Horne Wilson, and her husband Jeff, of Shelby, his son, Henry Forest Horne, Jr., and his wife, Diane, of Raleigh; as well as five grandchildren; Heather Price and her husband, Harley, Ashley Horne, Robert Horne, Spencer Horne and CJ Philbeck. He is also survived by his sisters Iris Horne Maloney, and her husband Robert, of Shelby, Genevieve Horne Childers of Farmville, and brother, Garnie Horne, and his wife Robin of Louisa, VA, and sister-in-law Marie Horne of Shelby. A service and celebration of life will be held Tuesday, January 12 at 11:00 A.M., Eastside Baptist Church, Shelby. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church, followed by a graveside service, with full military honors, at Cleveland Memorial Park commencing at 2:30 P.M
