Mary Frances Bankhead McBrayer

HUNTERSVILLE - Mary Frances Bankhead McBrayer died after a short illness on Saturday, June 6, 2015.
Mrs. McBrayer was born in Bullock Creek, South Carolina, in 1918. She grew up in Lattimore and then lived in several states, including Connecticut, where she resided for 42 years. She has lived in Davidson, North Carolina since 2008.
Mrs. McBrayer attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon for two years and completed her bachelor's degree at Winthrop University in South Carolina. She was a teacher who also worked on an advanced degree in library science. After her retirement, she frequently volunteered at a nursing home in Avon, Connecticut. She was a long-time member of the West Avon Congregational Church.
She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, John Albert McBrayer; her daughter, Ann McBrayer Olson; and her grandson, Jonah Thomas Surratt.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Surratt and husband Jim of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; her daughter, Jane Gangi and husband Robyn of Bethel, Connecticut; a sister, Sarah Hunter of Davidson, North Carolina; a brother, John Bankhead of Shelby, North Carolina; four grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for family will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2015, at Lattimore Baptist Church in Lattimore, North Carolina. Dr. Kendell Cameron, senior pastor of Mt. Holly Baptist Church, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Drive, Huntersville, North Carolina, 28078.
