Mr. Dan Gold Elmore

Mr. Dan Gold Elmore, 76, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2015 at his home. Born October 7, 1938 in Cleveland County, Mr. Elmore was the son of the late John B. Elmore and Inez Cline Elmore. Dan graduated from Shelby High School in 1957 and Lenoir Rhyne University in 1961.

Following graduation he married Beverly Brice Mitchell of Shelby. Dan served in the United States Army from 1961-1963 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He began his 35-year career with Burlington Industries in 1963, serving in various capacities while living in Oxford, NC, Gastonia, NC, Forest City, NC, High Point, NC, Greensboro, NC and New York City. After retiring in 1999, Dan & Beverly returned home to Shelby. Dan was an active member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, Cleveland Country Club, and The Dover YMCA where he served on the Board of Directors. During his retirement he enjoyed playing golf, reading, traveling, refinishing furniture, and working on his farm in Upper Cleveland County. He also found great pleasure in landscaping and gardening, especially in sharing his plants and vegetables with family and countless friends. However, the greatest highlight of his life was time spent with his children and five grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Dan is preceded in death by, his brothers, J.B. Elmore, Jr. and Ben C. Elmore.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, of 53 years, son, Dan Jr. and wife, Leslie of Charlotte, NC, daughter, Lisa and husband, Bryan Berry of Wilson, NC, grandchildren, Chelsea Howe of Arlington, VA, Kristin Howe and Jason Howe of Wilson, NC, (both students at UNC), Mason Elmore and Bridget Elmore of Charlotte, NC. In addition his extended family included nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel George and the staff of Duke University Cancer Center for the 15 years of extraordinary care. They would also like to thank Hospice of Cleveland County for their care.

A Celebration of Life honoring Dan will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 2pm at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey and Pastor Rebecca Jones officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to: Duke University Prostate Cancer Research, 710 W. Main Street, Suite 200, Durham, NC 27701, Shelby Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Cleveland County.
