  “TAI CHI Classes” 9:00 – 10:00 AM Classes will be weekly on Thursday.  Fee - $3.00 Per Class – Payable on the 1st Thursday of each month. Please pre-register at the senior center.  Minimum of 10 students required.

South Mountains State Park


Summer Kid’s Club


Join a Park Ranger this summer to learn all sorts of fun stuff about water critters, trees, animals, and fish just to name a few. Programs will be offered from June 15th to August 19th. The same program will be offered twice a week every Tuesday at 11:00 am and Thursday at 2:00 pm.  See below for program schedule and descriptions.


6/5 – “Streamside Hike” – Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River.


6/5 & 6/26 – “Tree ID Hike” – Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0 mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00 pm.


6/6, 6/13, 6/20 & 6/27 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 11:00 am in the Visitor Center auditorium.


6/6 & 6/27 – “Birds: The Good, the Bad, the Funny” – Join a Park Ranger for an indoor program and a short hike to identify and to learn more about our feathered friends. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.


6/12 – “What’s in the Water?” – How many different kinds of critters live in the river? Join a Park Ranger in the stream to turn over some rocks and learn more about what you might find there. Come prepared to get wet! Meet at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am.


6/12 & 13 – “Creatures of the Night” – Meet in the Visitor Centr auditorium at 2:00 pm to learn about some of our local nocturnal creatures. Note: This program will NOT have any live specimens.

Bike Night at Sonic in Shelby

    May/Thursday Mornings – Children’s Programming – 10:00 am. The Cleveland County Memorial Library is offering two weekly Pre-school programs, on Thursday mornings. Read to Your Bunny for infants up to age 2 at 10:00 am and Tot Time for ages 2-5 years old at 10:30 am. The theme for the month of May is flowers. “Made for Each Other” – September 9 – October 14 – A Juried Art Exhibition Featuring Ceramic Cream & Sugar Sets. Entry deadline: June 4.


A Day in the Life of Cleveland County Photography Contest – You have 36 hours to take photos anywhere in Cleveland County. Noon, Friday, May 21st until Midnight, Saturday, May 22nd. Submit Entries - Friday June 4th. Opening Reception - Thursday July 1st, 5:30 - 7:30pm. Exhibit - July 5th - 29th. Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:30pm & Saturday July 10th, 10:00am - 2:00pm.


“Shavings & Thrums” – A juried exhibition that seeks to showcase a wide range of outstanding works related to fiber and wood media. Contemporary, innovative and traditional works created with fiber or wood as the primary media are welcome. Entry deadline: July 30.


 


14th Annual Crest Horse Shoe Club Golf Tournament


    The 4th Annual Crest Horse Shoe Club Golf Tournament sponsored by Sewell Contractors is scheduled to take place on May 28th at River Bend Golf Club. The tournament format is captain choice and which will begin promptly at 2pm. Lunch will be served prior to the start of the tournament and many door prizes will be given away. Additional competitive prizes include: Closest to the pin on par 3 holes, Longest drive, Longest putt. This year’s tournament will cost $220 per team and all tournament participants will receive a Crest Charger T-shirt. You are encouraged to bring a team to this fun-filled event and/or sponsor a hole or cart. Shelby Police Department’s “Cop Camp”


The Shelby Police Department is now accepting applications for “Cop Camp” 2010. Applications can be picked up at the Shelby Police Department, located at 311 S. Lafayette Street, or at the Shelby Police Department Sub-Station located inside the Cleveland Mall. The number of campers will be limited. The deadline of accepting applications is Friday, May 28. This is the 6th Annual Summer Day Camp for children between the ages of 8 and 13. Camp is designed to create a positive relationship between the children of our community and our police officers. This is accomplished through fun-filled activities, field trips, and one-on-one time with child. Officers will emphasize the importance of the four core values of “Cop Camp”, RESPECT, INTEGRITY, HONESTY AND TEAMWORK. Camp dates, location and times: Ages 8-10 June 21-25 at Shelby City Park at 850 W. Sumter St., 8 am until 4:30 pm. Ages 11-13 July 12-16 at Shelby City Park at 850 W. Sumter St. at 8 am until 4:30 pm. More information will be provided to the parents of kids attending camp as to the drop-off times, etc. Requirements for “Cop Camp”


 • Between the ages of 8 and 13 years old, • Have daily transportation to and from camp, • Abide by the Conduct Rules set forth by the police officers on the first day of camp, • Handicapped and Special Needs children are welcome in camp. Kidney Association Fundraiser


    There will be a Fundraiser Concert  on Saturday, May 29th at Gardner Webb University featuring “The Marshall Tucker Band”. The concert will start at 7:00 pm. Tickets: Floor - $30.00 and Stadium - $25.00. We are also selling tickets to sponsor foster kids for $15.00. Cleveland County Partnership for Children


  Cleveland County Partnership for children has scheduled Developmental Screenings for More at Four Children on May 26- 27th. If your child will be four years old on or before August 31st of 2010 and has not applied to attend preschool in the More at, please call Gail Allen at 704-480-5623 or Patsy Walker at 704-480-5621 to get an application and schedule a screening. 


    Our 2nd Annual Car Show will be held Saturday, June 5th at 1742 E. Dixon Boulevard, Shelby, NC (Old Wal-Mart Parking Lot) 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Registration fee is $15.00. There will be Hot Dogs for sale too. This event is sponsored by Flowers, Inc., Hanebrands, Padgett’s Amoco, Pharr Techologies, and Truliant Federal Credit Union. All proceeds will benefit the Dolly Parton Imagination Library providing books to Cleveland County children aged birth to five.
