Potato Project helps feed hungry
The Cleveland County Potato Project produced 83,000 pounds of potatoes, 41,000 white and 42,000 pounds of sweet potatoes in 2014.
Although this amount is “way down” from the previous two years, Doug Sharp said 2014 was a very difficult year weather wise. “We were still planting white potatoes in May when we should have been nearing harvest time and we know we can do better if the rain and temperature are favorable,’’ he said.
Some changes for the new year including planting a large plot of sweet potatoes in Patterson Springs on land owned by the Standridge family and at Boiling Springs Methodist Church property. Travis Mangum continues to plow up one of the county’s nicest residential areas to plant potatoes and when Charles Reed printed a request for land in the Baptist newsletter several folks volunteered land for potato planting.
Sharp said that in spite of the difficulties last year that he feels blessed by the outpouring of help that has helped feed the hungry in Cleveland County.
The annual dinner meeting of the Cleveland County Potato project will be held on Jan. 29 at the Baptist Men’s Work Camp. The first planting is on Feb. 3 at the Magnum property.
