Robert Lee Hammett
Robert Lee Hammett, born January 5, 1926, made the crossing to be with his Lord on November 5, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley.
A native of Gaffney, SC, "Bob" is the son of Davis Hammett and Ava Barrett Hammett. He is predeceased by his sisters - Margaret Cobb of Tampa, FL, Grace Huskey of Blacksburg, SC, and Betty Bragg of Boydton, VA.
As a young man, "Bobby" was fascinated with aviation. He joined the Army Air Corp after high school graduation, serving in Japan, Philipines and Korea. Later, working with Bendix Corporation and NASA, he helped engineer the first satellite and establish satellite tracking stations throughout the world. One of Bob's proudest accomplishment was developing, along with his engineering team, the Low Frequency Noise Amplifier, which made world-wide communications possible.
Bob is the father of two sons, two daughters, and the proud grandfather of a very nice young man, Khai.
The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at Spartanburg Regional Heart Care. Also, special thanks to the staff at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House, whose tender caring and family support was a blessed gift. Thank you all.
A graveside Celebration Of Life Service will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at 2:00 PM,at Mountain View Cemetery, Blacksburg, SC, with Dr. Dennis Willoughby officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. At other times, the family will be at their respective homes.
