Bobby Gene Smith

Bobby Gene Smith, 91, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Wendover Hospice, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Spartanburg County, SC, on January 6, 1934, he was the son of the late Mitchell Smith and Vernie Blackwood Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Wilson Smith; brothers, John M. Smith and Charles Otis "O.C." Smith; sister, Jackie Smith Wynn; and son-in-law, Garland Butler.

A graduate of Shelby High School's Class of 1952, Bobby began his career at First National Bank in Shelby, where he worked for a remarkable 60 years. Starting as a cashier, Bobby's dedication, integrity, and work ethic earned him the respect of his colleagues and community members. He eventually retired as Sr. Vice President, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and service to the bank and to Shelby.

Bobby's life was marked by a deep commitment to Rotary International, where he proudly served the Shelby Rotary Club for over 58 years. His devotion to the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" was evident in his perfect attendance, as well as his leadership roles, including Club President and District Governor. Bobby's contributions to the organization were recognized with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow and Rotary Foundation Benefactor honors, which reflected his selfless service and dedication to making a difference.

Bobby's commitment to service extended beyond Rotary. He actively served on the board of the Cleveland Fire Department and was involved with several civic organizations over the years, including the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce, the Cleveland County Mental Health Association, and the Salvation Army. His unwavering belief in helping others made him a pillar of the community.

A lifelong member of New Bethel Church of Shelby, Bobby's faith was central to his life. He served in several roles including Sunday School teacher, choir director, church treasurer, and chairman of the board. It was at church that he met his best friend and love of his life, Joyce, with whom he shared 69 years of marriage. Their bond, rooted in their shared faith and love for one another, was an example to all who knew them.

Bobby and Joyce enjoyed traveling together, creating memories while exploring new places. A lifelong enthusiast of trains, Bobby found joy in walking the railroad tracks and sharing his passion with others. His love for walking kept him active well into his later years, most recently walking with his sister, Phyllis, and cherishing every moment. Above all, Bobby's greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he adored. He also found deep fulfillment in spending time with God and reading His Word, a practice that was central to his daily life.

Bobby was the epitome of integrity and lived his life according to the Golden Rule, always treating others with kindness, humility, and respect. His legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Bobby's life was a testament to the power of selfless service, unwavering faith, and deep love for family and community.
