Brenda Carolyn Wesson Gardner, 81, of Shelby, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023 at her home.

Born in Cleveland County, on June 23, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Purvis Iredell Wesson and Mae Allen Wesson. She began her working career at Roses Department Store where she became the manager, and would later retire as the Cleveland County Tax Collector. In her retirement she would go on to co-own Antiques and More in Beams Mill. Brenda was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she was serving as the church clerk, but she had also served in about every position possible at the church.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Wesson and Joel Wesson.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-one years Hal Max Gardner, Sr.; a stepson Max Gardner, Jr (Aimee); a stepdaughter, Holly Gardner; three brothers, Purvis Wesson (Mary Jane) of Shelby, John Wesson (Doris) of Shelby, and Dan Wesson (Antionne) of Shelby, two sisters, Jessie Hedrick (Sonny) of Raleigh and Gailya Hamrick (John) of Shelby; a special aunt, Mary Faye Bridges of Shelby; sixteen loving nieces and nephews and a multitude of great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Toby Bird officiating.

The burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
