David Gene Hartz, 73, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at Hospice Wendover in Shelby after a courageous battle with ALS. He was born in Jasper County and raised in Newton, Iowa, the son of the late Virgil and Grace Borchert Hartz.

Dave loved playing golf and proudly achieved a hole-in-one during his playing career. He was also an enthusiastic Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was a member of Central Methodist Church in Kings Mountain.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Denise Faye Hartz; two sons, Eric Hartz (April) and Justin Hartz both of Iowa; stepdaughters Melissa Martin (Chris) of Shelby, North Carolina and Rhonda Marx (Jim) of Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; sister Cathy VanGundy of Iowa; brother Rick Hartz (Gail) of Iowa; and his loving nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home & Crematory, with Pastor Perry Hines officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
