Derrell Gene Smith

Derrell Gene Smith, known affectionately by those close to him as Derrell, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024, in his hometown of Earl, North Carolina.

Born on March 3, 1959 in Toluca, North Carolina, to the late Thomas B. Smith Sr. and Retha C. Smith, Derrell's life was one of unwavering devotion to his family and the embodiment of kindness.

A loving husband, father and brother, Derrell is survived by his loving wife Amy of 44 years, their children: Jonathan LeMaster-Smith and his wife Shannon, William D. Smith, and Diana Hudson and her husband James. He was a cherished grandfather to Jack and Dani Hudson, who will miss his gentle guidance and thoughtful wisdom. Derrell also leaves behind a legacy of brotherhood and camaraderie with his siblings: Thomas B. Smith Jr. and his wife Linda, Carter Smith and his wife Judy, Judy Glover and her husband Robert, and Kathy Simpson. Preceding him in death were his beloved daughter, Jaclyn Smith, and brother, Marshall Smith, both of whom he held dear in his heart until his final days.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Derrell will be held on Friday Evening, December 6, 2024 at 7:00 PM in the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, with the Dr. Jonathan LeMaster-Smith officiating. The Family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Derrell's life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his family and a profound sense of responsibility that he carried with grace. He was the kind of man who would go out of his way to ensure that those he loved were taken care of, often putting their needs before his own. His presence was a source of stability and comfort to his family, a testament to his loving nature.
