Doris Mathis Baugham Palmer

Doris Mathis Baugham Palmer , 96, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Hospice of Wendover.

She is survived by her two sons Bob Baugham and wife Billie, and Mark Baugham and step daughter Kathy Palmer Speight (Gerald), grandson Bryan Gordon (Kristen) and son Lane, grandson Matt Gordon (Angel) and son Henry. She is also survived by neices Terry Howe, Susan Bowen and Gail Oliver (Mike), nephew Ivan Washburn (Joan) and neice Kelly Washburn, nephew Mike Hamrick (Betty) and nephew David Hamrick (Helen).

Doris was born in Wilkes County in 1927 to the late M.M. and Ruby Mathis and was preceded in death by husbands Marvin "Pete" Baugham and William "Bill" Palmer and her twin sister Dot Hamrick and husband Carson.

Mrs. Palmer graduated in 1945 from Roaring River High School and was the valedictorian of that year. After High School Doris graduated from King's College in Charlotte, N.C. and worked for Southern Bearings Company. In 1952 she married Pete Baugham and moved to Shelby, N. C. where she worked for Cleveland County Register of Deeds and later at First Baptist Church. In the mid sixties she worked with Dr. T. R. Harris to establish Cleveland Home Health Agency where she worked until she retired.

Doris was lifelong member of First Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. She sang in the church choir for 65 years. Her love for music led her to become a member of The Cecilia Music Club that she enjoyed for many years.

Upon retirement she married Bill Palmer where they had 12 wonderful years together and enjoyed traveling and meeting new friends.

Doris was an avid bridge player and was a member of numerous bridge clubs through the years where she made many lifelong friends.

A Funeral Service will be held on December 2, 2023 in the Webb Chapel at First Baptist Church, 120 N. Lafayette Street, Shelby, NC 28150. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM and service at 11:00 AM with Dr. Robert Canoy officiating. She will be laid to rest at Cleveland Memorial Park.
