Elbert "Ab" Gowan, age 93, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Carolina's Caring Hospice in Sherrills Ford, NC.
Elbert was born December 9, 1929 in Rutherford County to the late Wallace Gowan and Dullie Gilbert Gowan. He worked for General Fireproofing for several years and was an equipment operator at the Rutherford County Landfill for ten years, but his passion and lifelong work was farming. In his later years, he cut and finished rugs with Grover Greene. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. He loved family gatherings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Gowan; wife, Ostine Rome Gowan; great-granddaughter, Katelynn Gowan; brothers, James, Roland, Eugene and Paul Gowan; sisters, Virginia Green, Bonnie Foster, Gladys Teston, Wilma Russell and Katherine Vickers.
Those left to treasure his memory include his sons, Carlton Gowan (Sherry) of Shelby and Allen Gowan (Betty) of Rutherfordton; grandchildren, Samantha Lee (Donald), Lacey McKinney (Jason), Jason Gowan, Jonathan Gowan, Tony Gowan (Gina), Matthew Gowan and Katie Hull (Mark); nine grandchildren; a number of stepchildren, which includes Janice and Robert Dayberry of Cleveland County.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, November 29th at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Terry Roach officiating. Interment will follow at Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
