George Michael Southard

George Michael Southard, beloved son of George and Norma Southard, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on March 4, 2025.

Born and raised in Shelby, Michael graduated from Shelby High School in 1961 and later was honored to serve his country in the United States Air Force, boots on the ground during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he retired from Fiber Industries.

Michael's life was marked by his deep love for his parents, friends and the simple joys of life. He was a man of great faith and a devoted member of First Baptist Church for over 70 years, where he served many roles including as an usher and a deacon. He put his whole self into his church life, building many items still in use at First Baptist, and found unending joy in being involved with the community garden. He found happiness in many things, including showing people his model trains, caring for his cows, woodworking, and cultivating a garden full of vegetables and beautiful flowers that he freely gave away. Michael also enjoyed restoring pieces of furniture for whomever asked him to do so.

Michael leaves behind a legacy of kindness and a circle of friends who loved him dearly and were touched by his warmth, generosity, and unwavering spirit.

Michael will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
