Gilbert Leroy Yocum, age 75, of Shelby, NC passed away on Monday, July 5, 2021 at Hospice
Wendover after battling cancer for the third time. Gilbert was born in Joplin, Missouri on May 31,
- He was the son of the late Alton Charles Yocum and wife Ruth Alsup Yocum.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Michael Charles Yocum and
Johnnie Alton Yocum.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sherry Williams Yocum; two daughters Danielle Yocum
Jernigan and husband Chris of Snow Hill, NC , and Donna Jo Yocum of Charlotte,NC ; and a son
Gilbert Alton Yocum and wife Lora of Reno, NV.; five grandchildren Lane, Case, Harleigh Grace,
Ethan and Alton; sister Mona Boerngen and husband Jim; and many nieces and nephews.
Gilbert served as a hospital Navy Corpsman on the front lines during the Vietnam War from
1965-1969. After receiving his doctorate in 1976, Gilbert dedicated his professional skills to the
Air Force as a podiatrist until his retirement in 1994.
He loved gardening, golf, politics, a good baseball game, dancing and listening to country music,
playing the lottery, and visiting with many friends during his downtime.
The family invites you to share in a time of remembrance with them from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm
on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Military Honors
provided by the U.S. Air Force.
In keeping with the tradition of sending flowers, the family asks that azaleas are sent so they may plant them in the ground so the yard looks like Augusta, Gilbert's favorite golf course; or a donation to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
