Haywood Homsley, Jr.

Haywood Homsley, Jr. entered into eternal life of Sunday, August 4, 2024, at his residence in Shelby, NC.

He was born on September 18, 1942, to the late Haywood Homsley, Sr. and the late Grace Ellen Brooks Homsley.
Haywood graduated from Cleveland High School in 1960 where he was an outstanding basketball player. After graduation, he received a basketball scholarship from Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. While at Livingstone, Haywood pledged Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Being socially conscious and a part of the injustices of his fellow African Americans during this era. Haywood, during one of his visits home, along with a dozen of his classmates, staged a sit-in at Smith Drug Store in Shelby. He continued his pursuit of higher education and received his master's degree from Howard University.
Haywood was a member of New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church where he was a Trustee for 35 years. He also served on the Usher Board.
Haywood worked many years for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and Township #3 Elementary School as a Social Worker. Haywood, in 2008, was one of the original founding members of the Community Math Academy, Inc. For over six consecutive summers, he worked to help build the school's community presence, encouraged parents to partner with the school and mentored elementary school students to enhance their math skills. His special gift of community partnership building helped significantly with the early growth and success of the Academy. He was also a member of the "Close the Gap" Committee for Cleveland County. Haywood served many years as the Master of Ceremony for the Delta Sigma Theta "Jabberwock" program. His gift of entertaining audiences expanded to various other community events as well. In his spare time, he loved playing basketball and watching westerns on tv.
He leaves to cherish fond memories his wife of 52 years, Anganette Hamrick Homsley, of the home; children, Lamar Woods (Pamela), Kenny Homsley (Victoria), both of Shelby, NC, a daughter, Monique Homsley (Ronnie) of Richmond, VA; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; a brother in- law, Jewel Hamrick, III (Netta); sister in law, Frances Hamrick Green of Norfolk, VA; nephew, Jewel Hamrick IV; niece, Deshenia Hart; along with a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at New Ellis Baptist Church, Shelby, NC at 11:00 a.m.
