John Whitaker, 93, of Shelby passed away June 6, 2024 surrounded by his family.

He was born on September 23, 1930 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Fay Alvin Whitaker and Oveda Ezell Whitaker.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter Janet Whitaker Austell and granddaughter Melanie Austell along with his two brothers and four sisters.

John is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Patsy Gold Brooks Whitaker, sister Elizabeth Jones of Ellenboro, two sons Phil Whitaker (Lynn) of Shelby and Kenneth Whitaker (Linda) of Shelby, and son-in-law, Nick Austell. Also left to cherish his memory are his five grandchildren Melissa Austell Bradshaw, Rebekah Whitaker, Jessica Whitaker Francis, Terry Whitaker, Kelly Whitaker and 10 great grandchildren.

He owned and operated Cleveland Floor Covering for over 60 years. As a lifelong member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church he served as a deacon, enjoyed singing in the choir and ushering. John enjoyed farming and was an avid golfer. He will be remembered as a loving and caring father, grandfather, and friend.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Sandy Plains Baptist Church with Pastor Elisabeth Cothran and Rev. Dr. David Webb officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior in the fellowship hall. A burial will follow at Sandy Plains Baptist Church.
