John William Woods, Sr.

Mr. John William “How Sweet It Is “Woods, Sr. 82, of 2308 Mason Street, Shelby, NC went to his heavenly home on Monday, January 1, 2013 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby with his wife at his side.

 

He was born on April 19 1930 in Cherokee County, SC to the late George and Mattie Dawkins Woods.  John retired from Fiber Industries after 32 years of service and was also retired from Blacks Service Station after 50 years of service.

 

 

John was a member of First Baptist Church in Earl, NC and served on the deacon Board, choir, senior ministry, usher board, pastoral care ministry and was an assistant Sunday school Superintendent.    

 

John affectionately known as “How Sweet It Is” never met a stranger.  He had a love for all children and always had candy to share.  John wore many hats and because of his love for Christ and all whom he met, he enjoyed wearing them all.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Viola N. Woods; a daughter, Mary Woods; a granddaughter, Peggy Crank and four brothers and a sister.

 

Left to cherish loving memories are his wife, Dorothy Hopper-Woods of the home; two sons, John Woods, Jr. (Regina) and Spurgeon Woods; a daughter, Mattie W. Mathis all of Shelby; a step-son, Paul A. Littlejohn, II of Shelby; a step-daughter, Katie Littlejohn of Greensboro, NC; a grandson that was raised in his home as a son, Camden Lenair (Sherry) of Shelby; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Jefferies and Sarah McCleve both of Lincolnton, NC and Wilma Smith (Frankie) of Shelby and many other family members and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Earl with Minister Randy Thurman officiating and Rev. Simon McClain delivering the eulogy.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church on Saturday.  Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloes.net.  Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
