Julie Durham

Julie Durham died peacefully on January 23 at CaroMont Hospital in Gastonia, NC.

Although she faced physical challenges throughout her life, Julie always kept a cheerful spirit, warm heart and sense of humor that delighted everyone she knew. She was especially loved by - and deeply loved - the young people in her life, nieces, nephews and their children. Julie's eyes twinkled with delight when they were with her. She cherished her extended family.
Julie was born in Charleston, SC, as her father was completing his medical training at Medical University of SC and moved to Kings Mountain in 1959 at age two. She attended Kings Mountain public schools, graduating from Kings Mountain High School in 1977. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of South Carolina Columbia in 1984.
As a teenager, Julie enjoyed convertible rides in the family's TR6, and trips to Cherry Grove Beach, SC where she collected sea shells and more friends. In 1976, Julie was chosen to represent Kings Mountain High School as Carrousel Princess.
Julie's career included roles with Home Savings Bank, Foust Textiles, and perhaps her all-time favorite, being a radio disc jockey. Friends & family relished hearing her proper and smooth 'radio voice,' and Julie loved being in the midst of the broadcast magic that drew her to the field in college.
Music brought Julie joy. As a young girl, she loved The Monkees and was once their special guest back stage after a concert in Charlotte. In the height of their popularity, heartthrob Davy Jones called Julie to chat to wish her a happy birthday. In recent years, she enjoyed Michael Bolton and Christian Kane, and hit TV shows Matlock and Elsbeth. She also excelled at crossword puzzles, enjoyed crafting and crocheting for her many nieces and nephews, and hosting tea parties and special occasions with them.
Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Thomas G. "Blue" Durham and Sarah Frances "Casey" Durham, and her dear younger sister, Sallee Durham.

Julie is survived by her sister Pat Durham Potter of Kings Mountain , brother-in-law Dan Potter of Kings Mountain, brother Casey Durham and wife Chasity of Social Circle, GA, spouse John Eng, and special friend Camille Bagwell.
Much loved nieces and nephews, are Meghan Potter Wood and husband Lane of Coral Springs, FL, and their children Durham, Ezra, Lily, Sadie and Hazel; Lesley Potter Deaton and husband Tyler of Gastonia, NC and their children Addison, Eli, Henry and Rory; and, Susie Potter Wease of Kings Mountain, and her children Beckett and Mila Kate; C.J. Cooke and his children Cheyenne and Axton of Shelby, NC; Katie Cooke Shelton and husband Josh and their child Izabella of Kings Mountain; Casey Renee Durham Buckelew and husband Britt and their child Ellie of Cusseta, Alabama; Garrison Durham and wife Jordan and their children Rigsby and Jovi of Lenox, Georgia.

The service will be Friday, January 31, 2pm in the Overflow Room/Student Center at First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, with Brother Chip Sloan and Lane Wood presiding. The family will receive friends before the service from 1:00-1:50pm.

In tribute to Julie's love for children, gifts can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 or to the charity of one's choice.
