Lawrence Kenneth Vassy, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home in Shelby, NC, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2024.

Born on August 27, 1930, in Laurens, SC, Ken was the cherished son of the late William Lawrence Vassy and Vivian Elizabeth Pinson Vassy. In addition to his parents, Ken is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Joann Smiley Vassy.

A dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Shelby, he served as a deacon, contributing significantly to the church community.

A proud veteran, Ken served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a familiar voice in the community as an announcer for WADA radio station and Shelby High School football games. His passion for education led him to a 16-year tenure as an instructor at Cleveland Community College.

Ken's legacy is one of service, commitment, and love for his community and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Ken is survived by his three daughters, Cynthia O'Brien, Teresa Smith, and Lisa Blake. Also left to cherish his memory are his 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 31, 2024 in the Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church with Pastor Asher Panton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Sunset Cemetery.
