 Leah Day
Leah started quilting in 2005 when she decided to make a double wedding ring quilt to celebrate her own wedding. She readily admits she used the wrong materials and tools and created an epic failure. Fascinated with the art of quilting, Leah stuck with it and learned to piece and applique and then experimented with free motion quilting, which can be described as sewing the three layers of the quilt together in any direction without the use of the machine’s feed dogs. The Free Motion Quilting Project evolved from a love of creating quilting designs which Leah shared via an online blog. Quilters all over the world now follow Leah and her designs.
Leah has created a new definition for professional quilter. A self proclaimed introvert, Leah prefers to stay home with her young family rather than traveling around which is the traditional method of teaching classes. Using the internet with her husband’s computer expertise, Leah teaches via YouTube, www.craftsy.com, and her own blog, which enables her to reach millions of people without leaving home, which is in Shelby, NC.
Come to the Foothills Quilt Fest for a rare opportunity to meet and learn from one of the young rock stars of the internet quilting world. Admission is $5. While Leah’s lecture and demonstrations will be on Saturday, the show runs Friday, October 11, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, October 12, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The show features more than 150 quilts made by quilters from Cleveland and Rutherford counties. Vendors will also be available, including onsite sewing machine tune-ups and scissor sharpening.
