Michael Steven Smith

Michael Steven Smith, 78, slipped quietly away from his earthly home in Kings Mountain, North Carolina and transitioned to his heavenly home on November 13, 2024.

Michael was born in Kings Mountain on August 18, 1946, and spent most of his life involved in many activities in town. He was the son of the late Manuel David Smith and Eunice McFalls Smith. He came from a loving family of seven siblings. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty S. Sarvis and brother-in-law Ray Sarvis of Pompano Beach, Florida. He was also preceded in death by his sister Becky Smith Ware, his brother-in-law Bill Ware, his brother, Vernon E. Smith, sister-in law, Toy Hutto Smith, and by his brother, Donald R. Smith, all of Kings Mountain. Surviving him are his brother, Charles T. Smith, sister-in-law Helen O. Smith, brother Paul D. Smith, and sister-in-law, Pat Gladden Smith, all of Kings Mountain. He had many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Mike graduated from Kings Mountain High School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Appalachian State University. He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a medic. A lifelong educator, Mike taught in the Kings Mountain District Schools for 30 years and served on the Kings Mountain District Schools Board of Education as well. Anyone who knew Mike knew he loved the Lord above anything else and was a devout Christian. He had a servant's heart, and he would give you the shirt off his back even if you were a stranger. He loved to share Jesus with those that he met. He served in the Church of God (Pentecostal) Church throughout his whole life as an elder, deacon, and worked with the Cleveland County Prison Ministry for over 20 years. He also worked with the unhoused population, served on the Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry board for many years, and served in both children's and bus ministry at church. He would always say, not just to family, but to someone he just met, "call me if you need me. It's never too late or early." He enjoyed buying homes and renovating them. He also found joy in caring for his plants, and as his health declined, he still made sure to keep his flowers looking beautiful. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mike's name may be made to his church, Cornerstone Church of God, 202 Margrace Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.
