Nixon Reid Martin, age 80, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away July 17, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Nixon was born in Cleveland County on December 22, 1940. He was the son of the late Thurman and Pansy Martin.

Nixon graduated in 1959 from No. 3 High School and went on to earn his B.S degree from Western Carolina University. Nixon served his country in the U.S. Army for 3 years. He enjoyed a professional career as a bookkeeper and enjoyed farming, gardening, and tinkering in his free time. He most enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends and especially his five granddaughters. Nixon was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and then Elizabeth Baptist Church, serving in many capacities over the years including Sunday School teacher, Deacon and treasurer. In his later years, he enjoyed working with the Elizabeth Baptist Church Handyman Ministry.

Nixon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Jones Martin and his daughters: Nicole Martin Jones and husband Reg (Pinehurst) and Tricia Martin Whitaker and husband, Hardin (Shelby). He is also survived by his five granddaughters Katie, Anna and Lydia Jones and Grace and Rachel Whitaker and his sister, Norma Koon and husband, C.O.

His funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Elizabeth Baptist Church with Dr. Rit Varriale officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
