Nona Wilson Shuford

Nona Wilson Shuford, age 90 of Lawndale, NC went peacefully home to be with her Lord on May 26,2024 in Greensboro, NC.

She was born on January 2, 1934 in Rutherford County, North Carolina to parents Lawrence Vernon and Flossie Robinson Wilson. Nona was a graduate of Polkville High School and Women's College of Greensboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband Paul R, Shuford. Surviving Nona are two sisters, Eula Mae Crews and husband Norman Crews of Vermont and Sharon Grigg and husband Warren Grigg of Fallston, NC. Also surviving are two sons, Tim Shuford and wife Lauri of Jamestown, NC and Barry Shuford of Matthews, NC. Nona leaves four grandchildren, Stephen Shuford and his wife Kristen of Charlotte, Joel Shuford and his wife Leslie of Raleigh, NC , Chandler Garlow and her husband Jared of Milton, FL, and Chase Shuford of Virgina Beach, Va. Nona so loved her grandchildren and her five great grandchildren.

Nona Shuford was a 34 year career educator, most of those teaching second grade at Fallston Elementary where she was beloved by generations of her students. She was creative in the classroom and believed all children could learn.

She was an active member in Polkville Methodist Church, participating in the adult choir and the Methodist Women after serving as church organist at Palm Tree Methodist Church for numerous years. Nona and husband Paul traveled extensively working with Habitat for Humanity and volunteered to rebuild homes after hurricane Floyd in Eastern North Carolina. Nona was a member of Camp Call Chapter No. 287 of The Order of The Eastern Star, first initiated in 1952. She served as Worthy Matron twelve times from 1983-2020 and District Deputy Grand Matron on three separate occasions. She was an honorary member at the Shelby, Fallston, Hollis, Cliffside and Casar chapters as well. She enjoyed traveling across the state visiting chapters and making lifelong friends.

Nona Shuford was a true friend that dedicated her life to serving others, a loving wife and mother, a servant to her church and her organizations, an inspiring teacher and a truly remarkable woman.

Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. David A. Irish and Dr. Rick Hamrick at Polkville Methodist Church on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 1:00 pm with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday at the church from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Polkville Methodist Church, PO Box 9, Polkville, NC 28136 or to Camp Call Chapter No. 287 Order of The Eastern Star P.O. Box 2000, Shelby, NC 28152.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Fallston.
