Richard Morgan Bowles, Sr., MD

Richard Morgan Bowles, Sr., MD, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024 in Shelby, NC at the age of 97.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on April 11, 1927 he was the son of the late Dr. Ray McCune Bowles and Lucille Wickizer Bowles. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Robert Wickizer Bowles, sister Nancy Lucille Bowles, and wife Jo Carol Jones Bowles.

Dr. Bowles faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a dedicated lifelong member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, where he served in numerous roles, contributing faithfully to the life of the congregation. He took great pride in being a graduate of both Duke University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Duke Medical School. His passion for pediatric care inspired him to co-found the Shelby Children's Clinic, where he left a lasting legacy of dedication and compassion.

He was a long standing member of the Cleveland Country Club, where he played a key role in establishing the club's first member-guest golf tournament. A gifted golfer and tennis player, he won the men's golf club championship multiple years. His passion for sailing was equally strong, and he proudly earned his captain's license, spending a lifetime enjoying the water.

Dr. Bowles is survived by his wife Mary Walker Bowles, his children, Linda Jorgensen, Susan Sheffield, Rick Bowles, Jr. (June), April Griggs (Mike), Wendy Coble, and Mary Beam (Dennis), as well as his brother, Lawrence Thompson Bowles (Judith). Also left to cherish his memory are his nine loving grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. A service of remembrance will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Pastor Drew Mangione officiating.
