RJ McCall

In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 25, 2024, RJ McCall, passed away at his home in Shelby, North Carolina. With his loving and devoted wife by his side, RJ entered peacefully and gently into his glorious place in Heaven. We rejoice and give thanks for the 78 years of his life.

RJ was born in the fall season of October 30, 1945, in Jackson County (Tilley Creek) North Carolina to the late Harley McCall, Jr. and the late Curlee McCall. Growing up among a large and loving family RJ learned the values of compassion and caring for others. He began his working career at an early age and later RJ's life journey took him to proudly and honorably serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. RJ courageously covered one million miles in the jungles of Vietnam, a testament to his pride and dedication to his country. Following his military career RJ embarked on his employment in the auto dealership industry, working for 45 years in North Carolina and South Carolina. He was an honest and hardworking man and he was always ready to lend a hand or support anyone in need. RJ was well respected and with every handshake he was committed to being fair and true to everyone. He was a friend to so many and loved helping anyone he met.

RJ held a great passion for cars- all types of cars and he was indeed a true NASCAR fan. Golfing was a favorite pastime for him and he delighted in spending time on the greens with his son and friends. These happy golfing memories were held in his heart long after RJ's vision dimmed and he was not able to golf any longer. He often enjoyed listening to beautiful gospel music and he loved the heartfelt songs and stories of country music.

RJ's great love for his family was immeasurable. He married the love of his life, Doris Ann Wells on July 13, 1966 and they have shared 57 years of a wonderful marriage. Blessed with an amazing son and daughter-in-law and a precious granddaughter who was his pride and joy, RJ was thankful each and every day for his blessings.

Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to a wonderful man who has taught us many life lessons. His memory will be a part of us forever. In lieu of flowers, let us honor RJ by sharing a smile, offering a kind word, and extending a helping hand. RJ would be pleased.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Carroll, Ronald, John and Timothy McCall and his sisters, Betty Fuller and Martha Mullins.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Doris Wells McCall of Shelby; his loving son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Amy McCall of Raleigh; his granddaughter, Haley McCall who he adored; a sister, Mary Morgan; brothers, Bill McCall and Ray McCall and his wife, Glenda; an aunt, Lila Coggins; an uncle, Spencer Tilley; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

A funeral service with military honors will be held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, May 30, 2024 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
