Sidney "Sid" Stern Dixon Jr.

SHELBY, N.C. -- Sidney "Sid" Stern Dixon Jr. , died February 13, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

A native of North Carolina, he is survived by his wife, Barbara Smith Dixon of Shelby, his daughter, Laura Dixon Lampley of Shelby and her husband Chuck Lampley; his son, Sidney Stern Dixon III of Charlotte, and his wife, Louise Dixon; and five grandchildren, Sidney Stern Dixon IV of Denver, Colorado, and Hannah Dixon, of Edwards, Colorado; and, Elizabeth Lampley of Charlotte, Sydney Lampley of Winston-Salem, and Sarah Lampley of Chapel Hill.

Sid was born in 1934 in Hookerton, N.C., in Greene County, where the Dixon family had lived since the late 1600s, to Sidney Stern Dixon and Marjorie Floyd Dixon. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Floyd Dixon Barlow, of Kannapolis as well as his parents. He spent his boyhood in Hookerton, Nashville, Tennessee, and Wilson, N.C., where he graduated from Charles L. Coon High School.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1956 with a degree in Chemistry and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. Following college graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy where he spent most of his service time in Pensacola, Florida. After four years, he joined the Naval Reserve and ended his military career as a Lieutenant Commander.

While in the Navy, he married Barbara Ann Smith of Wilson, N.C., the love of his life. They will have been married 65 years on March 2.

After the Navy, he joined Dan River Mills in Danville, Virginia, and subsequently spent his entire civilian career in the textile industry in North Carolina and Virginia. He retired from Sara Lee Knit Products/National Textiles in Winston-Salem and moved to Shelby where he had made many friends while employed with Dover/Doran Textiles.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church and served as a deacon and elder at both Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church in Tarboro, N.C., and at Shelby Presbyterian Church in Shelby. At Shelby Presbyterian Church, he served as a youth leader and a Sunday School teacher for the Covenant Class. Among other activities, he had been a volunteer with Atrium Health Cleveland, and a wine sommelier at Owl's Eye Vineyards.

His later adulthood was focused primarily on his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, stock investing, and sharing his love of wine.

He last resided at Cleveland Pines, and the family wishes to thank the staff there for the care shown to him over the last several months.

A service celebrating his life will be held at a later date.
